The age calculator rule refers to how we calculate a person’s age based on their date of birth. Here’s how it works:

Basic Rule:

Age = Current Year − Birth Year

But this is adjusted based on whether the birthday has occurred yet in the current year:

  • If the birthday has already passed (or is today): Age = Current Year − Birth Year
  • If the birthday hasn’t occurred yet: Age = Current Year − Birth Year − 1

Example:

  • Born: March 15, 1990
  • Today: July 30, 2026
  • Since March 15 has already passed this year → Age = 2026 − 1990 = 36 years old

Key Considerations:

  1. Exact day matters — you only “turn” an age on your actual birth date.
  2. Leap year birthdays (Feb 29) — people born on Feb 29 typically celebrate on Feb 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, depending on the country or legal system.
  3. Legal age — in most countries, you legally reach a new age at the start of your birthday (i.e., at midnight).
  4. East Asian age reckoning — some cultures (traditionally in Korea, China, Japan) count age differently: a person is 1 at birth and gains a year every Lunar New Year or calendar year, making them 1–2 years older than the Western calculation.

Type Current Year − Birth Year on a calculator. Example: 2026 − 1990 = 36

It subtracts your birth date from today’s date and adjusts if your birthday hasn’t passed yet this year.

Type 0.7734 and turn the calculator upside down. It says HELL0 (or type 55378008 upside down for a fun message). For “I LUV U,” type 0 7 8 0 7 1 upside down.

Use the trick: Think of a number 1–9, multiply by 2, add 5, multiply by 50, and add 1776 (the current year trick varies; subtract your birth year; the last two digits are your age).

AI can use facial analysis to guess your age from a photograph, but it’s not always right. It can’t know exactly how old you are unless you tell it.
